OSMaD is proud to bring the Victorian premiere of The Hunchback of Notre Dame to life on stage in December 2023.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a musical based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo, with songs from the Disney movie by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. The show tells the story of Quasimodo, a hunchbacked bell-ringer who lives in the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Quasimodo longs to be accepted by society but is shunned and ridiculed for his appearance. He becomes infatuated with the beautiful gypsy dancer Esmeralda, who is also the object of desire for the evil archdeacon Frollo.
Exploring themes of love, acceptance, and societal prejudice, our production will focus on the motif of light vs dark and explore how the characters evolve. The score features powerful ballads and soaring anthems, including the iconic “Out There,” “God Help the Outcasts,” and “Hellfire.” The musical has been praised for its beautiful score, strong performances, and powerful message.
OSMaD is excited to be collaborating with Concordis Chamber Choir to include a 32 member choir alongside our cast and ensemble. Concordis has established itself as a leading chamber choir in Australia, having performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and at other distinguished competitions and festivals. Combining an orchestra, cast and choir on stage will create a powerful musical experience on a scale rarely seen in most modern musicals.
