This week, the Don Macmillan cocktail party, hosted by the Cardinal Club was held at Scotch. The evening began with a row past of the 1st and 2nd XVIIIs before adjourning to the Boykett Room where attendees were welcomed by Cardinal Club President, Ross Burney. School Principal, Dr Scott Marsh was in attendance and the guest speaker was Tom Macky (’17). Tom was a member of the winning Scotch crew at the 2017 HOR regatta and went on to win the at the Henley Royal Regatta that year.
The Don Macmillan cocktail party is a celebration of Scotch rowing, past and present and a commemoration of the Scotch decade crews. The night is in honour of one of the greats of Scotch and Australian rowing, Don Macmillan, and is held each year in the leadup to the APS Head of the River regatta which is Saturday 23 March this year.
At Wednesday’s assembly, one boat was christened in honour of 1971 Captain of Boats, Alex Sloan (’71). Alex rowed in the 1st XVIII in 1970 and 1971. After leaving Scotch, Alex went on to row in the Australian junior VIII titles from 1973-1975, and in the winning 1979 and 1980 Victorian King’s Cup crews, narrowly missing out on making the Australian squad for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Alex stroked the Australian coxless pair at the 1979 World Rowing Championships in Yugoslavia.
